'Mirzapur: The Movie' has arrived in theatres on September 4, taking audiences back to the world of Purvanchal with an “unexplored” story set in 2018, the year the first season of the hit series was rolled out. Rather than serving as a direct continuation, the movie as per reports explores a new narrative within the Mirzapur universe. The movie is set between Episode 6 and Episode 7 of Season 1, allowing several familiar characters (including some who are later killed in the series) to return on screen. Pankaj Tripathi reprises his role as Kaleen Bhaiya, while Divyenndu returns as Munna Tripathi and Shweta Tripathi Sharma as Golu Gupta. Star-politician Ravi Kishan also plays a central role in the new story. Tripathi has assured audiences that prior knowledge of the series is not essential to enjoy the movie. “You don't need to be familiar with Mirzapur at all to enjoy the movie. The movie could challenge 'Awarapan 2', which opened at around Rs 22 crore rupees net, for a spot among the biggest Hindi openings of 2026. With September 4 coinciding with the Janmashtami holiday, the movie also has the advantage of potentially strong spot bookings. While the movie carries an 'A' certification, its massive fan base and the holiday advantage could help it deliver a bigger opening. The Emraan Hashmi-starrer, which emerged as a recent box-office success, opened at around Rs 22 crore rupees net in the Hindi market after recording approximately Rs 8.50 crore rupees in gross advance bookings for its opening day. 'Mirzapur: The Movie', meanwhile, had already clocked around Rs 6.50 crore rupees in advance bookings by 8 pm, with final pre-rollout sales expected to potentially reach levels comparable to 'Awarapan 2'.
As per the latest buzz, The movie also has an advantage as it coincides with the Janmashtami holiday, potentially driving significant spot bookings and walk-in audiences. Although the movie carries an adult certification, its strong franchise following could work in its favour.
In further updates, A source close to the movie shared that 'Mirzapur: The Movie' has been certified by the CBFC with 'hardly any modifications', retaining all the raw elements intended by the makers.
On top of that, The sources further shared, "This means audiences will get to experience the much-awaited theatrical adaptation exactly the way the makers intended it to be seen, retaining its raw, unfiltered essence on the big screen."
Going by the reports, 35 seconds of footage had been cut from the movie by the board. However, the source claims that no cuts have been made to the movie and very few modifications have been suggested.
