Bangladesh pin hopes on sporting diplomacy to host India in September

Aminul Haque, Bangladesh’s State Minister for Youth and Sports, shared on Tuesday that the country was looking forward to hosting India in September and believes any distance between the two countries can be bridged through sporting diplomacy.
Adding to this, The BCB had revealed at the start of the year that they would host India for a three-match ODI and T20I series in August-September 2026, after the tour which was initially scheduled for 2025 was called off owing to diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh and India have had a strained relationship in the recent past that forced the then Yunus-led government to withdraw their participation in the last T20 World Cup in India citing security issues, casting a doubt over the possibility of the tour.
Notably, With the BCB putting up television and media rights on sale earlier this month for the India series, the signs pointed towards the tour getting back on track. The notion swelled further after the schedule for India’s tour of Sri Lanka in August did not include T20Is as opposed to earlier discussions, potentially paving the way for India to then tour Bangladesh.
As per the latest buzz, The BCB also insisted that they will enhance security measures for the India series if required.
In further updates, However, fresh doubts emerged over the series after the BCB put the media rights sale process on hold despite issuing a tender notification inviting bids, as first reported by Cricbuzz on July 1.
On top of that, “The current government is giving utmost importance to sports diplomacy. And since cricket is a place of prestige for us, since cricket has a very strong position in our world cricket…we have already spoken to the Indian Embassy, they have also spoken to us and they are all waiting for India to come to Bangladesh in September,” Aminul told reporters at Dhaka on Tuesday.
“After arriving, I think that we will overcome the tension that was there (between the two countries) over a small incident in the past and hopefully our sports diplomacy, our communication, our movement, everything will continue with our neighbouring country,” he added.
